Meet Your Hosts
As your hosts at Bear Paw Lodge, our journey is deeply intertwined with the San Juan Mountains. We share a profound love for this breathtaking region and are committed to ensuring your stay is filled with warmth, genuine care, and unforgettable moments.

What is the story and history behind Bear Paw Lodge?
Our cabins and vacation homes have been an integral part of the Vallecito Lake community for many years, carrying a long legacy of mountain comfort. Nestled cozily into an ancient alpine forest of towering Ponderosa pines, the lodge was built to embody the timeless spirit of the San Juan Mountains—offering travelers a peaceful, uncrowded retreat to disconnect from everyday hustle and connect with nature.
Who are the hosts, and what is your approach to hospitality?
Our journey is deeply intertwined with a profound love for Southwest Colorado. As your hosts, we are committed to providing an authentic, warm, and attentive experience. From helping you plan the perfect day trip to ensuring your cabin is cozy and fully equipped, our goal is to treat every guest like family and help you build Colorado vacation memories that last a lifetime.
What makes Bear Paw Lodge different from a standard hotel or resort stay?
We offer a true "home away from home" experience rather than a cookie-cutter room. Instead of shared hallways and tight spaces, our guests enjoy completely private, fully furnished mountain cabins (1–3 bedrooms) or spacious off-site vacation homes (2–6 bedrooms). Every rental features its own fully equipped kitchen, comfortable living areas, charcoal grills, and a fireplace or wood stove—giving you total privacy surrounded by the San Juan National Forest.
What kind of environment and atmosphere can we expect at the lodge?
Expect a woodsy, relaxing, and incredibly peaceful mountain environment. We are located at an elevation of 8,000 feet, right at the gateway to the Weminuche Wilderness (Colorado’s largest wilderness area). You can hear the mountain streams, catch water views, and take an easy walk down to the 12-mile scenic shoreline of Vallecito Lake. It's quiet, beautiful, and the air genuinely smells like the sweet vanilla and butterscotch of our Ponderosa pines!
Is Bear Paw Lodge a good fit for families with children?
Absolutely—we are exceptionally kid-friendly! We want kids to experience an old-school, active mountain vacation. On-site, we have a wonderful playground structure complete with swings and a sandbox. Families love hanging out in our common areas playing volleyball, badminton, horseshoes, cornhole, and spikeball.
Can we host a large family reunion, group getaway, or intimate wedding here?
Yes, we are a premier destination for groups! Our variety of cabin sizes and spacious vacation homes allow large groups or multi-generational families to stay close together while still enjoying their own private spaces. Our large, well-lit central campfire pit is the ultimate evening gathering spot for groups to roast marshmallows, share stories, and stargaze under the clear Colorado night sky.
Are you a pet-friendly property?
We love dogs! Well-behaved dogs are warmly welcomed in our on-site cabins (just let us know in advance so we can prepare your space). To maintain a comfortable environment for all guests, we just ask that dogs are leashed while exploring the grounds and kept off the furniture. Please note that some of our off-site vacation homes are pet friendly.
When is the best time of year to visit Bear Paw Lodge?
Our main cabin rental season runs from May 1st through October 31st, making it spectacular for summer watersports on the lake, prime fall foliage tours, and autumn hunting/fishing. However, the Vallecito Lake area turns into a magical winter wonderland perfect for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing, with downhill skiing just a short drive away at Purgatory Resort!
