Bear Paw Lodge is located just quarter of a mile from the 12-mile scenic shoreline of Vallecito Lake, one of Colorado's largest and most beautiful bodies of water. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and jet skiing. Boat rentals and marinas are available directly on the lake.
Can we go hiking and biking directly from or near the property?
Yes. The lodge is surrounded by the San Juan National Forest and sits right on the edge of the 490,000-acre Weminuche Wilderness. There are miles of world-class trails nearby for all skill levels, ranging from casual lakeside walks to challenging mountain treks (Lake Eileen Trail, Vallecito Creek Trail, Pine River Trail) and scenic biking routes.
What are the best winter activities near Bear Paw Lodge?
While we are a premier destination for summer lake recreation, our winter guests enjoy easy access to snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling in the surrounding backcountry. For downhill skiing and snowboarding, Purgatory Resort is an easy day trip away.
How far is Durango, and what is there to do there?
Durango is located just 22 miles southwest of the lodge (about a 35-minute scenic drive). Popular day trips include riding the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, catching the Bar-D Chuckwagon dinner show, and exploring downtown’s local restaurants, craft breweries, art galleries, and museums.
Are there historical landmarks or national parks nearby?
Yes. Mesa Verde National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings, is located just west of Durango and makes an excellent day-trip itinerary from our cabins.
